What Wedding Photography Costs in Sudbury & Northern Ontario

Why the Northern Ontario number isn't the Toronto number

Almost every published figure for Ontario wedding photography is a Toronto number. For 2026, most Toronto couples spend between $3,500 and $5,000, and roughly 60% of studios in the GTA charge $3,000 to $4,000 for a base eight-hour package with one photographer. Across Ontario as a whole, the usual range runs $2,500 to $4,500.

Northern Ontario sits below Toronto — but read those numbers carefully, because two things are usually left out of them.

The first is tax. Most quotes you'll compare are pre-HST. A $3,500 Toronto package is $3,955 once the invoice arrives. Every price on this page already includes HST, so what you read is what you pay.

The second is travel. Northern Ontario is spread out, and travel is where quotes quietly grow. Mine don't. There are no travel fees and no accommodation charges anywhere in Ontario — Sudbury, North Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, Ottawa, Toronto and the GTA are all priced the same. If you could hire a photographer in your own city without paying extra to get them there, you shouldn't have to pay extra to bring me. Travel is only charged for weddings outside the province.

The honest summary: photography here does cost less than in the city, but not half as much. There are fewer full-time wedding photographers in the north, and the experienced ones book out earlier — often a year or more ahead.

I don't sell hours. I sell moments.

Most wedding photography is priced in hours, and that quietly turns your day into a stopwatch. It also pushes couples into the wrong decision — buying time they don't need, or cutting the day short in the place that mattered most.

I'd rather you build it the other way around. These are the moments a wedding day is actually made of:

• Getting ready — both partners, in both locations
• The first look
• The ceremony
• Portraits of the two of you
• Wedding party and family portraits
• Group photos
• The reception

Start from which of those you want, and the hours follow on their own. A day with two getting-ready locations and a first look needs more room than a ceremony and a dinner. Deciding moments first and hours second is how couples end up paying for the coverage they actually wanted — and it's the conversation I'd rather have with you than one about rates.

For reference, a full wedding day usually lands at 8 to 12 hours. That isn't a package length so much as what it typically takes to hold all of those moments without anyone watching the clock.

What else moves the price

A second photographer

Two photographers means both partners are covered while getting ready, and the ceremony is captured from two angles at once. I'll tell you honestly when it matters: above roughly 200 guests, where one person genuinely cannot be in two rooms at the same time. Below that, a single photographer covers a wedding day well, and I'd rather you spend the difference elsewhere. Coverage with a second photographer is included at $5,700.

An engagement session

An engagement session is the easiest way to get comfortable in front of a camera before the day that matters — and most couples use the photos for save-the-dates and invitations. It can be added to any collection, and it's already included in the $5,700 and $7,800 collections.

What you keep

Albums and prints are add-ons rather than something you're required to buy. One thing worth knowing: if you book a year in advance, prints are included at no cost.

Booking, retainers and payments

A $500 retainer holds your date. It's non-refundable, but it isn't rigid either — if you need to move your wedding, your retainer moves with it, as long as the new date is open.

The balance doesn't have to arrive in one piece. You can pay monthly or in chunks at your own pace; everything is simply settled three weeks before the wedding, so the week of your wedding has nothing financial in it.

When you'll see your photos

You'll receive a small preview shortly after the wedding, with the full gallery typically delivered within 6 to 10 weeks, depending on the season.

How to compare two quotes fairly

Two photographers can quote what looks like the same number and mean very different things. Before you compare, ask both of us the same seven questions — this is worth doing even if you don't hire me.

1. Is that number before or after HST? A 13% difference is not a rounding error.
2. Are travel and accommodation included, and to where? Ask for the number that applies to your venue.
3. Which moments does the coverage actually include? Ask them to name them, not to quote hours.
4. One photographer or two?
5. How many images, and is every delivered image fully edited?
6. Can you print your own photos? Print rights should be in writing.
7. What's the retainer, and what happens if the date moves?

Where photography sits in a wedding budget

Photography usually lands between 5% and 15% of a total wedding budget. It's worth knowing what that percentage buys: the flowers wilt, the food is eaten, and the venue hands the keys to someone else the next morning. The photographs are one of the few things that leave the day with you.

That isn't a reason to overspend. It's a reason to be deliberate about where this line sits relative to the others.
