Photographer's tips for a Science North wedding

Science North's biggest strength is its versatility — very few Sudbury venues let you go from a lakeside outdoor ceremony to a glowing rock cavern in the same afternoon. Having shot here, here's my honest take on how to use that well.

Use the outdoor grounds in summer. If your wedding is in the warmer months, the lakeside grounds are genuinely beautiful — any of the green areas around the building work for family formals and couple's portraits, right on Ramsey Lake.

The high-contrast window light is a real draw. Inside the museum, the big windows create strong, high-contrast light that a lot of couples love — it gives your photos a bright, clean, well-lit look that reads differently from a traditionally lit banquet hall.

Know the trade-off around the building. There's a lot of concrete around the exterior, and the angles can be tricky to work with if it's your first time shooting here. I always show couples real photos from past Science North sessions ahead of time and talk through what they actually want out of the day, so expectations are set before we start.

The Butterfly Gallery needs a plan. It's one of the most striking indoor spots, but it's humid, so you have to move fast and be creative — the space lends itself to a lot of different looks, but you need a clear vision going in rather than figuring it out on the spot.
